For the Education of the Children - Part 2
Shabazz High School


During Part 1 of this project, Shabazz students created K-12 curriculum materials after studying and visiting Mound Bayou, one of the few remaining historic Black townships in the US. During Part 2, Shabazz students will create K-12 curriculum packets for distribution to MMSD staff members. Through several in-service opportunities MMSD staff members will be trained to use the Mound Bayou curriculum and web site.

Bilingual Literacy Project
Cherokee Middle School


The Bilingual Literacy Project is designed to support the academic success of Cherokee's growing bilingual Spanish-speaking population. The project has four components: building a collection of books in Spanish for the LMC; involving families in support of children's literacy goals; encouraging students and their families to read together; and strengthening parents' involvement in the school community.

Community Gardens
Hawthorne Elementary School


The community gardens project will help tie the community to the school. Through the purchase of supplies, tools, books, and a shed, the Hawthorne Community Garden will be able to maintain and sustain itself through the years to come. Community relationships will be enhanced through work with EMCC.

Toki Middle School Literacy Development Lab
Toki Middle School


This project will use Scholastic's Read 180 instructional program to service struggling readers in regular education, special education and English Language Learner programs. The program offers individualized skill instruction and motivating, technology-based components for building comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and fluency.

The Planting Roots Project
Falk Elementary School


The Planting Roots project would impact all 258 students of Falk Elementary School in that they would be involved in the creation of handmade mosaic tiles to be installed as an art piece on a new concrete sign identifying the neighborhood in which the school is located. The project would bring together the Greentree Neighborhood Association, the Falk PTO, Falk Students and the artist-in-residence, Bill Grover.

The Grove Project
Falk Elementary School

Students will be involved in interactive and collaborative musical activities that use the exploration of improvisation and composition as the backdrop for discovering or reinforcing basic music concepts in a hands-on setting.

Composed Poems
Wright Middle School


Students will have the opportunity to create their own poetry and musical compositions to accompany the poems. The language arts classroom and string classroom curricula will be integrated and extended with the skills of two gifted artists-in-residence, Fabu Mogaka, poet, and Leo Sidran, musician and composer.

Opera for the Young
Midvale Elementary School


Midvale will host a performance of the Opera for the Young. Students at Midvale will participate in the opera in a variety of ways, ranging from audience participation to acting and singing on stage.

African Drumming
Thoreau Elementary School


The purchase of 16-20 African drums as well as a performance by Omo-Ana African drummers and dancers from Milwaukee will enhance the music program at Thoreau. African drumming has been known to increase the self-esteem and motivational drive in at-risk students. Drumming is being used in communities throughout the world to foster creativity, focus, equality, and cooperation.
