On June 2, 2016 the Foundation hosted its third Adopt-a-School Summit. With over 140 people in attendance, the Foundation was able to engage with community members in rich conversations about the Adopt-a-School program. Neil Heinen, Editorial Director for WISC-TV and Madison Magazine, welcome both current and potential Adopt-a-School partners, as well as several school representatives. Karen Crossley, FMPS’s Interim Executive Director, spoke about the Foundation’s mission to develop partnerships to strengthen Madison’s public schools, and Jennifer Cheatham, Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent, provided insight on the Adopt-a-School program in the context of the importance of Family and Community Engagement.
Summit attendees learned Adopt-a-School best practices from a panel featuring Jay Affeldt, Principal of Memorial High School, Sarah Campagna, Branch Manager at Summit Credit Union, Karine Sloan, Principal of Leopold Elementary School, Josh Miller, Pastor of The Bridge Church, Colleen Shapleigh, Learning Coordinator at Cherokee Middle School, and Linda Blair, Community Services Team Lead at Thermo Fisher Scientific.
Attendees then participated in one of four breakout sessions:
1. Utilizing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in Adopt-a-School partnerships
2. Faith-based organizations as Adopt-a-School Partners
3. Adopt-a-School Best Practices
4. 50 Ways to Support a School: Human, Material, and Financial Resources
The Foundation thanks all those who were able to attend this year’s Summit as well as the many presenters and volunteers who helped to make this event a success. Special thanks to Blackhawk Church for hosting the Summit.
