Through a Foundation grant for the 2012-13 school year, Kennedy Elementary endeavored to teach students social skills in specials classes. A team of art, music, physical education, and REACH educators developed lessons linking social skills taught in classrooms to their own specific content areas. The grant provided story books and other resources needed to assist students in creating new knowledge of the social skills needed for school success. Kennedy staff incorporated social skills learning into all areas of their teaching curriculum, placing particular emphasis on listening skills, impulse control, accepting differences, and dealing with criticism and exclusion. They created “Walk for Words”, an annual school-community run/walk to sustain this program beyond the grant funding.
