FMPS funded a grant, piloted at Shorewood Hills Elementary, called Fostering Rainbow Connections Through Quality LGBTQ Children’s Literature. Now expanded to all 32 MMSD Elementary Schools, the project encourages inclusiveness by purchasing level-appropriate books relating to LGBTQ topics, such as gay and lesbian families. By training librarians on how to effectively introduce the new materials to students and staff, the program ensures that LGBTQ topics are included in human development, anti-bullying, and celebration of differences and commonalities education. While there is LGBTQ education in middle and high schools, young children are very receptive to acceptance of differences, and will benefit from early exposure. This program will affect the whole school community and help create a space where each student can feel safe and valued.
