PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY FEEDBACK SURVEY RESPONSES

Principal for a Day participants were asked to complete a Feedback Survey. The first question asked was "In general, how would you describe your Principal for a Day experience?" Every single respondent indicated that their experience was very positive.

What impressed you most about the school you visited?

"The school I visited obviously has great leadership from its principal, and the "All One Team" atmosphere was palpable in the school."

"The responsiveness of the staff to the students."

"The eager young people, the dedication of the staff and the complexity of the operation."

"The professionalism of the staff, the level of dedication and caring shown to each other and to the students. Their ability to maintain poise and humor was extraordinary."

"The individual attention to students and the principal's ability to solve problems."

"The energy and commitment of the staff as well as their willingness to be innovative."

"The schools approach to creating a positive, homey and safe environment to learn."

"Their ability to mold the great diversity of students into meaningful educational activities."

"The caring and concern of staff for students. Very personal interaction going on. High level of knowledge on the part of staff regarding individual students. Also some very innovative programs."

"Diversity is a part of every aspect of the school I visited. The affirmation that each child received from their teacher and fellow students was evident."

What did you see as your school's biggest challenge or weakness?

"Maintaining the necessary resources to address special needs students will be an important challenge given the proposed MMSD budget. Larger class sizes will be an issue also."

"Biggest challenges seem to be budgetary concerns for being able to staff the school to meet the wide range of student needs."

"The complexity of all the things that have to occur every day - keeping track of all students special needs, building upkeep, food service, etc…all in addition to teaching and education."

"Dealing with a significant number of students who do not want to be in school and are unwilling to take direction or guidance."
"The number of students in one facility."

"Continuing to meet the challenges of such a diverse student body - for example, they need Spanish speaking staff for the increasing number of Latino students."

"Teacher's ability to teach classes with such a difference in student's abilities."

"Funding cut-backs and changing demographics."

"Lack of money and resources."

"Unprepared students - academically and/or emotionally - due to challenging home situations."

"Funding, funding, funding! They need resources. I saw none wasted."

"Old physical plant. Demographics which span the income spectrum."

Did participating change the way you view public schools or the Madison Metropolitan School District in general?

"Seeing the commitment and pride of the teachers, support staff and administrators clearly reinforced the value of what they do and the challenges they overcome to succeed."

"Observing at my school made me more appreciative of the Catch-22 facing MMSD. If the district strives to assess all students and meet them where they are able to educate them, the need for specially trained adult staff is tremendous."

"Yes - the schools are very positive and the teachers and administrators are positive."

"Absolutely. Teachers and administrators clearly work very hard and deserve parental and community support."

"Yes. You have your hands full. School has changed dramatically in the last 15 years."

"The experience increased my respect of teachers and administration."

Would you like to become involved with the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools or with public education in general?

"I'll help in any way I can."

"I could speak to students on business issues."

"We could funnel a gift to the school through the Foundation."

"Serve as an advisor to the principal on business issues."

"Support the needs of staff, volunteerism between my business and the school! Grant resources when possible."

"Would like to help recruit other partner groups."

"My business gets many requests for contributions. We can't fund all the important requests, however I would look at a proposal for financial support of the Foundation."

"Most of the challenges revolve around money - I'm giving this some thought."

"I don't know where or how I fit in at this time. I am suggesting to my business partners ways in which we can help raise funds - it needs to be win: win."

"Serve as a community liaison."

"I'd like to buy the school some classroom rugs to replace those removed due to fire code changes. It is difficult for me to read grants for innovative educational ideas when I see something as small and simple as a rug missing in a primary classroom."
